Thank you to everyone who attended the Zoning Board hearing on Wednesday, Nov. 9. The Zoning Board voted 5-0 to approve the amendments to the Parker. Steve Monahan, Roger Gates, Bill Laity, Dave Jansen, and Chairman John Rosenthal all voted in favor. Bill Nybo was absent. Jim Baranski recused himself as one of the main speakers presenting in favor of the Parker project.
The City Council will now consider the amendments at its meeting on Monday, November 14, at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall. It is again deeply appreciated if you are able to attend. The Parker portion of the meeting will be a public hearing, meaning attendees are allowed to make comments.
The Zoning Board members who voted in favor of the Parker amendments argued essentially that opponents to the project do not understand the nature of progress and what Galena needs. Opponents of the Parker are also frequently compared to opponents of Walmart. (Opposition to Walmart, by the way, is an international phenomenon that has endured for decades over deep-seated beliefs about a range of issues. It is not the same debate as whether or not the Parker fits what Galena needs in order to prosper and whether or not it is an appropriate and safe location.)
Please continue to engage our elected officials by respectfully raising the legitimate issues that concern us. We don't need to accept a caricature that we are people who don't understand economic growth, progress, and what Galena needs in order to continue to be a great and thriving community.
Thank you again, deeply, for all you have done already to let your voice be heard. We look forward to seeing as many people as possible on Monday night..
